Course Description

This hands-on, one day class will give an overview of the tools used when shooting video stories solo or in small teams: camera operation, lighting and audio recording. Participants will learn how to prepare for a shoot, the essential equipment needed for the field, and how to “shoot for the editor.”

Requirements: No previous video production experience required. In the class, we’ll have 3 small video cameras available for practicing. Students are encouraged to bring their own cameras, i-phones and/or DSLRs.

About the Instructor:  Adele Schmidt

Adele Schmidt, a resident of Rockville, MD, is an adjunct professorial lecturer of the Film and Media Arts Division at American University in Washington DC. She is a film & video producer, director and editor who has won numerous awards in both documentary and fiction films. She is the co-owner of Zeitgeist Media LLC, an independent production company that currently released “Romantic Warriors – A Progressive Music Saga”, a documentary series about progressive rock music. She is the co-founder of Docs In Progress an organization that creates community through documentary.

Originally from Germany, Adele taught film and video production at the National Center for Cinematographic Studies in Mexico City. As Documentary Coach, Adele has consulted many filmmakers on their projects. Adele has served as a panelist for the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (Maryland), reviewing applications in the disciplines of writing, philosophy, history, and media arts.  Learn more on Adele Schmidt’s website
