“Abstraction”
May 3 through June 1

The Chestertown RiverArts’  open show for May 2013 is titled “Abstraction” and is open to all artists in all fine art mediums.  The curators are looking for all expressions of abstract art including works completely unrelated to the physical world and/or without literal meaning and works  with  roots in the physical world but substantially transformed into a composition  with wholly different values or meaning.   Abstraction may also be found by taking an unusual view of reality, e.g. imagine the beauty of other-worldly abstract compositions found in close detail or magnified views of the physical world.   Works might be created for the sake only of composition or a desired range of values, or may try to express a thought or emotion or a state of being.  The curators especially encourage artists who usually work with a concrete vision of reality to push their work and their minds into an abstract state.   Experimental approaches are welcome and the curators look forward to being surprised and informed by novel interpretations of this theme.

Check-in for submissions is at the RiverArts High Street galleries  Sunday, April 28 1 – 3pm or Monday,  April 29  11am-2pm.    Artists may submit up to 2 pieces.    The show will open Friday, May 3 with a reception 5-8pm.   The show will run through Saturday,  June 1 and will be mounted in the main RiverArts gallery contemporary with the “Second Look” studio gallery show of Plein Air paintings from RiverArts Spring plein air festival.  The submitted work should not have been previously shown in any RiverArts sponsored show.  All pieces for hanging must be properly wired with wires securely attached mechanically to the sides of the frame.   The curators prefer simple frames, but are open to special framing which enhances the presentation of the piece. Wired,  but otherwise unframed,  stretched canvasses are acceptable as are free-hanging canvasses with mounting hardware at the top.   Please contact the curator if you have a question on acceptable framing,  have a nontraditional plan for hanging,  or wish to submit pieces of width greater than 40” or height greater than 60”.

Entry fees for RiverArts members are $8 for one work and $15 for two; and for other artists $15 for one and $25 for two works.  On the back of each piece artists should provide:  Title of piece, artist’s name, contact phone number and email address, and price.  The gallery commission on sales is 35%.  The artist must leave work accepted into the show for the full run of the show.    Unsold work should be picked up either  Sunday,  June 2  Noon-4pm or Monday,  June 3  11am-2pm.

Judged Photography Show:  A Vision of a Moment in Time

Runs April 5 to April 26

All artists are invited to submit their photographic work to Chestertown RiverArts 11th Annual Photography Awards Show.  This is a highly popular annual show with historically wide-ranging participation from regional photographers.  Photographers seek to capture a fleeting moment where light and subject and mood all merge into a unique image, “A Vision of a Moment in Time.”  They partner with their cameras to produce a technically well executed picture and enjoy expressing their interpretations of the scene.  Photographers are invited to submit their work – B/W or color and traditional film or digital on any subject.   In this judged show, awards will include Best in Show, First, Second and Third Place, and Honorable Mentions. These awards will include modest monetary prizes.

We are pleased to announce there will be a panel of judges headed by Neal Jackson, a well-known photographer and photojournalist who has a home on the Eastern Shore. Learn more at www.nealjackson.com.

Out of Your Mind

Runs February 1 to February 23, 2013

What’s Your Inspiration?  Doodles to daydreams, photos to fantasies – What inspires your art?  From our minds, our imaginations, and our experiences come ideas and images, real and fantastic, serious and playful.  February’s theme celebrates the creative mind and all its muses.  This is the month to be a bit daring, over-the-top romantic, or simply working from your heart and mind.  When you bring your work, add a sentence to the registration form that describes what inspired you.  It may surprise our guests and your fellow artists and encourage a consideration of what art is all about.  This show is open to all artist ( members and non-members) and will include all media.

Drop off of art is Sunday, January 27 from 12 to 3:00 and Monday, January 28 from 10 to 2:00.
