Course Description
Before even picking up a camera, a filmmaker needs to answer the following questions: What are you going to shoot and why? Then the filmmaker needs to be able to tell his or her story in no more than three sentences or a short paragraph designed to generate interest. The next step is writing the “treatment”, or scene-by-scene breakdown that contains everything to be found in the actual screenplay or short film, except dialogue. Finally, the storyteller must develop the story/script and do research. By the end of this class students will have the beginnings of what they need to begin to shoot their narrative or documentary films.

Students should be prepared with a notebook and writing implements. Laptop computers are fine for this purpose, as well. Each student will be writing a logline comprising no more than three sentences or a short paragraph with a film idea or ideas they may want to pursue. We will learn brainstorming techniques to generate ideas and students will be divided in pairs to accomplish some of these exercises.

If students have demo reels or examples of their films or films in progress that they would like to share, please bring them with you to class.
