Stewardship Nested Earth by Greg Mort

On the Fly

When a Christmas wreath-turned-
yellow leads a finch to build her nest
beside my door, one

inadvertent slam propels her panic
with such force she knocks her home
right off its hook and flies away.

I find debris and pine needles on the brick:
one egg, unbroken, and two just-hatched
twists of leg and beak. No way

to know if they’ve survived except the one
who nuzzles closer to my open palm:
a pulse with feathers—and barely that —

but that at least. I re-hang the wreath and tuck
the nest in. Who am I to say a bird won’t come back

to a house of fading seasons
and banging doors?

Meredith Davies Hadaway

The “charge” to be a steward of nature can sometimes feel abstract and overwhelming. In this fast paced world of so many responsibilities, “should’s” and “have to’s”, what is it at the most subtle and deep level that changes our minds, or turns our hearts to authentically and perhaps instinctually tend to something or someone beyond ourselves?

Have you witnessed or experienced a moment when something in the natural world inspired a sense of awe, connection, coherence or any range of emotional response that sparked an urge to preserve, protect, heal or make a change?

We encourage artists to submit work that reflects a turning point… a moment, experience, realization or vision in relation to nature that inspired a new outlook, and perhaps a compassionate action.

Any medium is welcome including but not limited to painting, photography, sculpture, kinetic, poetry etc.

We are offering Greg Mort’s painting and Meredith Hadaway’s poem “ On the fly” as potential inspiration for this theme.

Vicco von Voss will serve as jurist for the exhibition. A renowned wood artist, von Voss is the 2016 recipient of the William Thornton Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship , “Made: In America” and the 2015 “Best in Show” recipient at the 2015 RiverArts Fine Woodworking show. His pieces have been shown in galleries throughout the United States and in Germany.

Greg Mort will serve as judge for the exhibition. Throughout his lifetime Greg Mort’s paintings have reflected the wonders and beauty of the natural world. Stewardship I was painted in 1991 at his Port Clyde, Maine studio and was destined soon to become part of President and Mrs. Bill Clinton’s collection during their early days in the White House.  ‘The Art of Stewardship Project” is a foundation created by the Mort family to foster stewardship of the environment through the arts. A grass roots effort, The Art of Stewardship Project assists arts communities by organizing and providing forums for interaction and dialogue offering resources and opportunities to artists in their role as Stewards of our Earth.

An opening reception will be held on April 1 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Artist and judge Greg Mort will be in attendance to present the awards. Come enjoy the exhibition, meet the artists and curators, and enjoy hors d’oeuvre and wine. All are welcome.

Chestertown RiverArts would like to thank curators Meredith Davies Hadaway and Jacqueline von Voss for their vision, and Vicco von Voss and Greg Mort for their support of this exhibition.
