Without Reference: the Abstract Show

Illumine Triptych by Barbara Parker

Co-curated by Barbara Parker and Ronn Akins, “Without Reference,” explores the relationships between colors and forms that define “abstract” art. Artists creating two- and three-dimensional work are encouraged to submit in any medium, including assemblage. The exhibition is open to all artists, it is not a juried show.

The beginning of the abstract movement is attributed to Wassily Kandinsky with such works as “Picture With a Circle” dating from 1911. What made the movement unique was that paintings did not depict anything from nature, neither person, place, nor thing. Kandinsky, by way of example, attached colors to sounds or emotions and paintings flowed from how those colors interacted with each other. Emphasis, therefore, is on color, composition, and design. The show is open to members and non-members of Chestertown RiverArts. Please contact the curator, Barbara Parker at or call the Gallery, 410-778-6300, with any questions about the exhibition.

A Woodworkers’ Showcase, a judged woodworking show, will be displayed in the Main Gallery February 6 through February 28, 2015. Established and emerging woodworking artists are invited to enter their original creations in wood made by any woodworking technique. Entries will be judged with modest cash prizes awarded.

The beauty of the wood form and finish will be enhanced by the concurrent Abstractions Exhibit in the Main Gallery, featuring two-dimensional art which also emphasizes beauty in shape, line, and space.

The curators hope to accept two pieces from each entrant but may need to accept only single entries due to space limitations. If a group of pieces can be displayed together on a single pedestal, they will be considered one entry and charged a single entry fee. Entry fee for RiverArts members is $10 for single entry, $20 for two; for non-members, it is $20 for one and $40 for two. Download Exhibition Contract here.

Due to limited gallery space, we ask that entrants email a digital photo of any piece that requires floor space, no later than January 16, 2015, to Chuck Engstrom at A brief description including dimensions should be included. If a piece cannot be accepted due to size, entrants will be notified and given sufficient time to enter another piece which can be displayed on a table, pedestal, or wall shelf. Prizes for the Woodworkers’ Showcase will be awarded during the Opening Reception at 6 pm February 6. Call Chuck Engstrom at 410-778-0877 with questions.
