Gift Shop Artists – February & March

Gift Shop Artists of the Month:
JoLecia Crowe and Patty Mowell

JoLecia Crowe

For as long as she can remember, JoLecia has been drawn to the art in the myriad details that surround us: the soft pink of a cherry blossom; the beauty of a piece of driftwood, greyed and softened by its journey through the tides; the fluid lines and rich colors of fall leaves. These are the things she draws inspiration from. After years of bouncing between mediums, she found her niche in polymer clay, a chameleon that can become aged bronze, richly grained wood, a deep translucent jade, or a delicate bloom. It’s a medium with endless possibilities that allows her to translate the details in nature that inspire her into wearable pieces of art. She is self-taught, learning through exploration and a healthy dose of staring off into space envisioning, but she is also a teacher who draws as much joy from creating as she does sharing and helping others discover their own creativity through this versatile medium.

Patty Mowell

Patty was raised in Baltimore County, within a family of artists. Her grandfather was a painter, grandmother a sculptor, and numerous other
family members who painted in watercolor and oils, and carved. The most recognized being her cousin, Peter Keating, (Jeff Forbes), who was well known for his paintings in the New Hope area.

Patty graduated in 1978 with a B.A. degree in Art from Lycoming College, where she studied both Art and Photography. That same year she began working for a photofinishing Co. in Towson, MD. Her work in Drawing, Watercolor and Photography was exhibited at the Towson Arts Festival and won a first and second place the two years there. In 1979 she and her husband moved to Chestertown, where she joined the Chestertown Arts League.

After raising a family Patty began painting again in 2000, and photographing again in 2005. She was awarded “Best Digital” that year by the Chestertown Arts League, and First Place, in the Juried Open Show for photography. In 2006, 2008 and 2009, received “Honorable Mention” in the Chestertown Arts League’s Open Photography Show, and in 2009, awarded first place for a watercolor at the C.A.L. Members Show, and the “Award Of Excellence” at the Open Juried Show. In 2011 her painting of “Tidewater Trader” became one of the logos for the web version of the paper.
