The essential skill for successful “throwing” on the potters’ wheel is proper preparation of the clay.  Wedging techniques to prepare the clay are necessary.  Then, starting with the clay in one to two pound pieces, centering techniques are demonstrated.  There are several ways to position one’s hands and every person has to explore which method fits their particular physical ways to work.  All wheel thrown pieces are variations on cylinders and hemispherical shapes and there are a variety of ways to make them.

Well-known in Kent County as “THE Potter,” Doug has been making pottery for 50 years! and maintains a studio in Still Pond. Doug taught high school ceramics for 27 years and has retired to resume being a full-time studio potter. His teaching experience means he can instruct beginners as well as more advanced students.

Fees: Tuition includes your first 25 lbs of clay and first bisque firing. There is an extra fee for glaze firings dependent on the size of your pieces.
