This class will be conducted online by RiverArts member Paul E. Santori.  Classes will be conducted from his studio and he will provide the model for the course and any props. Once you sign up, you will receive a link to the online meeting platform.

All the student needs to start the RiverArts Life Drawing Course is paper and a pencil.  That’s true, but for more versatility and creative freedom it is suggested that the student comes with a pad of newsprint and charcoal, preferably vine.  Newsprint pads and vine charcoal are available from Finishing Touch right here in Chestertown. Get the soft variety of vine charcoal. The reason why these specific materials are suggested is newsprint gives you large, cheap sheets of paper to enable you to add flourish and style to your drawings and it takes charcoal, which is more versatile than a pencil, well.

At the conclusion of the course participants will be invited to submit their best work for a juried exhibition to be displayed in the RiverArts Arcade.

Watch Paul demonstrate some techniques as he describes this class:

Class 1 – The Basics

  • Overview of materials: options and how to use them.
  • How to work with a model.
  • Achieving your core body shape
  • The short (and slightly longer) pose

Class 2 – Developing Your Own Style

  • Experimenting as you go along
  • Transitioning from short to longer poses and adding detail

Class 3 – Using the Environment

  • Using what’s around your model to make a complete picture
  • “Props” as an enhancement

Class 4 – The Challenge of Clothing

  • Pitfalls and how to avoid them
